21:02 – All kinds of Purple!

2017-21-day-2It’s day two of this years first 21 day declutter challenge.

Sadly, Christmas is over, and all the Christmas stuff just got packed away šŸ˜¦

Since this IS the year for getting rid off stuff, I thought it made sense to do a Christmas decoration review.

Most of my Christmas decoration is in the color of red and silver, but now and then I veer off into different color schemes. The last couple of years however, I’ve been going back to basic. So I figured it’s time to let some the other colors go.

As I have decluttered my Christmas decoration a few times before, I’m mostly left with a bunch of extras in the color of purple.

So here we are, a bunch of purples (yes, Melinda… sacrilegious.. I know) and others leaving the house.

purple-christmas-small

4 medium ball ornaments
5 smaller ball ornaments
7 tiny ball ornaments
2 purple tinsel garlands
1 box of fake snow
27 small ball ornaments
1 Christmas star (window hanging version)
=
47 Christmas ornaments out-the-door

    1. I have shed Christmas decoration the last 6 years.. and I am.. like you.. left with next to nothing. Mine are packed into two boxes (with the exception of the Christmas tree foot and my large red ball ornament) and placed in a cupboard. So thankfully I don’t have much left. Even so I’m still picking away at it šŸ˜‰ Hoping to eventually get down to one box šŸ™‚

    1. I hear you šŸ™‚

I have found though, that the last few years I have reverted back to my default tree decorations. Pretty much the same setup every year. I’m also noticing that I use less and less ornaments out on the furniture. I tend to decorate with plants and candles instead (with the exception of three or four staple items). so it wasn’t actually as hard as I thought it would be reducing my pile a bit more. There are some Christmas items I will NEVER get rid off though (they are as old as me) so don’t ever ask me to declutter THAT particular pile šŸ˜‰

      1. It’s the tree decorations I like although I do enjoy putting out table decorations as well. It’s just that with cats, I have to prioritize where the inevitable destruction is going to be (I mean, really, who can resist such shiny baubles?) so I chose to concentrate on the tree and then spend a week and a half trying to keep them out of it. LOL

        1. My stuff is mostly tree decorations also, I have some small baubles to add around some of the plant, and I have an awesome Santa that stands on the floor (wish I could add picture) beside that, it’s mostly the candles and one or two more things… oh and my snowman (a snuggly stuffed “animal” type). And that is pretty much all it.. all tucked away in a couple of boxes when not in use.

          1. I found some great boxes a couple of years ago for tree ornaments. I have two boxes and they each have several drawers and in each drawer there are little honeycomb openings for each individual ornament. It’s great. They’re not small boxes, but they store easily and the ornaments are nice and safe inside.

            1. Niiiice… it’s not always easy to find a way to keep them safe. I have made my own version of your drawer. I have a low height plastic tub that I have made similar to your honeycomb openings in, so each one have their own space. and since the tub is plastic it can take a punch without anything getting broken šŸ™‚ I have two tubs like this sitting in one of my boxes. I like your drawer thing though….

  1. I have had to move into a one bedroom apt and I am down to three big tubs of decorating items: spring/Easter, fall/Halloween and winter/Christmas. I go really simple for summer, light on any kind of decorations. I am feeling your pain and success in your decluttering project! Phew! Good luck and keep on going! šŸ™‚

    1. Outside of the stuff at are decorating my house all year round (vases, pictures, plants, my grandfathers old typewriter, lamps etc) I think I have one Easter decoration, and my Christmas stuff.

As I live in Norway, we don’t have thanksgiving and Halloween is just candy for the kids, oh.. and I have a couple of Norwegian flags for our independent day, that’s it I think… pretty low on seasonal decorations.. and than goodness for that, because I have more than enough of the daily stuff šŸ˜‰

I’m pretty impressed with your only three tubs though, I wish I was down to three tubs of decorations all together… that is something to strive for šŸ™‚ it might take me while though… šŸ¤”

      1. Anne, It was so hard to whittle the collected “stuff” down since being the only daughter (2 brothers) I am the family recorder. I saved as little as I could of my parents’ stuff, but enough to bring me back into the past, keeping special small items. šŸ™‚
My Mom lives in a small place, so I practiced paring down when she moved there. Smiles, Robin

        1. I hear you on the family stuff. Most of my family members are gone so I have inherited quite a few collectibles over the year. It’s been hard to implement them into my place as it’s not that big, and my style is so much Scandinavian clean lines, black, grey, white colors. Very modern furniture. My family stuff really have stuck out as a sore thumb, but I think I have managed to end up with the correct pieces. What I have kept fits.. and yes that include things like my grandfather old typewriter, grandmother old sewing machine, some old cups, art +++ What I struggle with most are the photos… but that is a task for another day šŸ˜‰

  2. Every year before Christmas, I say that I’m going to go through the Christmas stuff after Christmas when I have more time. Every year, after Christmas comes and I just want to pack it all away! LOL.. maybe, now that I’m inspired by your post, I will try to go through it as I pack it away this year.

      1. Well, I still have my tree up. Gasp! I love the new spot it had this year. I’m going to take it down this weekend though and my plan is still to go through some of it before packing it away.
