21.5 – It’s all about that Bose!

day-5We’re at day 5 of my 21 day declutter challenge.

When I lived in Houston 2007-2009, I lived in an rental place. An empty town home that needed to be furnished. As I didn’t know how long I would really be staying, I didn’t get to much stuff. A couch, a chair, a small dining table and chairs, a bed for me and one for guests, a couple of bookshelves, a rug, a bench for a TV, PlayStation (for playing DVD’s) and a speaker system!

I got myself a Bose Companion 5 Speaker set.

I first came across this set at a HI-FI exhibition years and years ago, someone was playing music and it sounded awesome! We went hunting for the sound to see what the system was, and we were shocked when we found out the music was coming from a PC speaker set, as we were expecting a full blown stereo system.

So when I moved to the States, I figured that why not get this particular set and use it as my home stereo system. Which I did ๐Ÿ™‚

I connected it to my TV and used it for music from my computer. I’m telling you, I love my Star Trek movies with a bit of a rumble, and this tiny set sure delivered even on this requirement, and I loved it.

So I took my system with me home, even though to use it here, I had to get a 220v to 110v converter.

For the longest time I used it in my living room for music, until a got a Logitech Squeezebox Touch media streamer. This gave me the ability to stream my Wimp/Tidal (same as Spotify) music directly to my regular stereo system. The Bose system got packed away, and it’s been sitting in my closet ever since ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

For some reason I’m having a hard time parting with this system. I’ve been thinking about using it in my guestroom, but I’m hardly ever there, and it does steal precious floor space (sub), I’ve been thinking about my bedroom.. but again, there is no logical space for it.

I’ve been trying several times to “get rid of it”, but every time I get cold feet… Is it because I just love the sound from it, and really want to keep it? Even thought I cant find any useful place to put it? I don’t know… My brain is saying yes but my heart has been saying no…

But I think it’s time to let the brain win this one… it’s time to get this out of the shelf and into the world!

So here we are… my Bose Companion 5 set is going out-the-door!

21-day-5-a

But this was a challenge of 5 items, my dear! Not a challenge of an item with model number 5 in it.

Well, yeah I know.. but there are actually 8 items to this “pack” ๐Ÿ™‚

1 sub
2 satellite speakers
1 controller
1 power cable
1 soundcable
1 usb cable
and not to forget the separate item not part of the companion set
1 converter unit
=
8 items really
but I count it all as 5 (sub, speakers, controller w/cables and converter)
so there ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’m being joined in this challenge by:
– Barb, at Decluttering The Stuff, she’s on day six already.
– Melinda, at PurpleSlobinRecovery, she is hilarious.. seems like I have a land now? She is joining with 15 minutes a day.
– Grace, at The CFO MOM Blog
– Jen, at The Hidden Hoarder, she is on day four and is beating the heck out of me with 120 items so far… you go girl!

CD galore!

While I was going through my living room during my “pseudo packing party” earlier this year, my music collection was one of those things that jumped out at me as being a separate tiny project for a later date.

Well the later date have come and gone, and its time to do something about the amount of music CD’s I have lurking around.

Once every blue moon, I go through all my music CD’s and clear out the ones I don’t want anymore. I tend to rip all my music to my computer first, so that I can keep the music I love, but I don’t necessarily need to keep the physical disks.

My rule is! Rip them all, but save only as many as will go into one CD case! Now that is not as restrictive as it might sound, as my CD case will take 80.

Why do I keep any CD’s at all? Well in the early days I used to play them at home as most of us did. Nowadays I stream my music through Wimp (similar to Spotify) at home, but I still have an old fashion CD player in my car. So if I want anything other than radio music, CD it is ๐Ÿ˜‰

And since I’m one of the crazy people, who loves driving with the top down on the car, “singing” at the top of my lungs along with the music, you see why I just have to keep some of my favourites around ๐Ÿ˜‰

For the time being I’m keeping around 50 albums, I’m sure some of these won’t make it through the next cut, but for now I’m good with that. Fortunately there are a few more going out the door… 79 CD’s to be exact…

It’s time…

You are the cutest little thing, and I love you dearly. You have served me well over the years, and I’m really sorry, my “little red one”, I think it’s time…

A couple of weeks ago I wrote an article “I’ve got my weekend cut out forย me“,ย about setting up a computer, and some of the work involved in moving from an old to a new. ย That weekend I spent my time swapping over from a computer I had borrowed, so I could get it out the door ๐Ÿ™‚

Today (and the next days) it’s time to tackle my cute little red 13,3” laptop!

Copy everything off the old and start the hard work of sorting out what to put on the new. I’ll pretty much be following the same procedure I wrote about last time.

So far I have moved about 56 GB of data, and it’s still going strong. Turns out there is loads of photos, videos, oh yeah, and music…

I already have backups of most, but for the job at hand – I’m copying everything to a separate folder on the external hard-drive, just in case.

I can see my next task, of sorting my external hard-drives, looming in the horizon ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’ll be needing at least a month, at some later time, sorting out my external hard-drives (I have several). I have to consolidate my backups and make sure I don’t have a zillion copies of everything. But, that’s another task, for another day ๐Ÿ˜‰

So what am I doing with my “little red one” when I’m done? Well…

I could clean it up! It might be useful as a backup (if I could make it work properly) but it’s 7 years old, and setting it up with the latest updates and drivers, would take a bit of time.

Or, I could send it out-the-door as an items in my decluttered pile.

I haven’t really made up my mind yet, it’s a cute little computer, I really like it, and it’s hard to part with ๐Ÿ˜‰

I might keep it a little longer, until I’m sure my new one works the way I want it to. I’ll let you know when I’ve had a think about it, and by the rate the backup is going… I have several days to mull it over ๐Ÿ˜‰
