Thriftiness getting in the way of decluttering?

I’m having a hard time…

Being that I have decided to only buy necessities this year, I’m trying to use up stuff I already have in my house.

As an example, let talk about… say…. toiletries!

I have all sorts of creams, hair products, facial stuff, make-up and so on. And it makes perfect sense to use up the items I have before I buy new!

Now, anybody that knows me, knows that, I have the shortest hair ever (by choice). I’d be hard pressed to use up one bottle of shampoo a year. I don’t really use hair products much. And I think I have a bottle of hairspray I’d be lucky to use up within the next 10 years.

If I manage to slap on some moisturiser in the morning, I’ve been good. Never mind facial cleanser, night cream, eye cream and other stuff.

I never really use make-up. If you see me dolled up in make-up even once a year, that’s a stretch ๐Ÿ˜‰

But, and that’s the kicker, being a girl and all ๐Ÿ˜‰ I do like pretty make-up and cool bottles of creams that smell nice, and my hairdresser always manage to convince me I need some products ๐Ÿ˜‰

I have gotten really good the last couple years, only buying the creams/shampoo I actually use. BUT I still have cabinets full of things given to me, and items bought and not used up (or ever used). I’m not kidding you, when I tell you, that I use so little of everything, that it’s going to take years to use it all up.

So what’s the problem you might ask!

Well the challenge is that, while it makes perfect sense to use up the stuff, I really, and I mean reallyย want to declutter my place, I just want the “crap” out of here!

In a way I’m letting my “thriftiness” get in the way of my decluttering .ย There are times I just want to let a “tornado” (yes, that would be me) loose and get the stuff out ofย my house.

But then my sensible (or we could argue, not so sensible) mind takes over.
“I should use this up, it makes perfect sense, since I’m not really buying much this year”
“I should give this away or sell this stuff, rather than recycle/toss is”
“I need to put it away, so that my sister, mother, friend, neighbour…(please feel free to add any others..) ย gets a look at it, before I give to charity/recycle/toss”

All these arguments makes perfect sense – but they are getting in my way of getting the stuff out of here, and achieving the uncluttered space I’m working hard to get to. And it’s starting to frustrate the heck out of me.

Well, why don’t you just “toss” it all?

I don’t know, it’s what I want to do, but is feels sacrilegious to just “toss” things that are worth something to other people, and that might even generate some money for me. But right now holding on to stuff, just so that I can give it away, to family or friends, or make half a dollar on it, are starting to become a hassle, that just seem to stop me cold in my progress.

So what is a girl to do?

When I sat down to write today, I wasn’t really planing on writing this. I suppose this post took a turn of its own;-) It seems my frustration is bigger that I realised. ย But, while writing this, I’ve come to realise what I need to do, to get a little closer, to achieving my goal of a somewhat more decluttered space.

I will keep stuff that I know I will manage to use up within a year.
Just take the toiletries mentioned above, I will keep hair products that I actually will use, but that darn hairspray is going. I’ll keep items I use, but (even if its a gift) I will get rid of things that I don’t see I will ever really get around to using or even start using within a year.

I will, when I declutter, ask friends and family if they want it (when it makes sense to ask) but, I won’t hold on to it longer than a few days, before they go out-the-door.

I will try to sell stuff that hasย enoughย value to make sense to sellย (furniture or expensive items), everything else I won’t stress with. I understand that I might be able to make a buck or two, and total by the time this is all said and done I might have lost out on a 100-200 dollars or so, but that’s OK! I’d rather not having all the frustration and stress. And I think my bank account will survive ๐Ÿ˜‰

But I will no longer, let the “rules” above get in my way. I’d rather just; not ask, not sell, not give away, if that makes my declutter process less frustrating and easier.

There is such a thing as, peace of mind, and right now, I think a decluttered space takes precedence over trying to be so darn “sensible”!

What about you?
How do you handle the balance between being sensible and “thrifty” and the need for a less cluttered space? ย I would love any advice you might have, on finding a good balance.

Happy as a clam…

I can’t even begin to tell you what wonderful weather we have had here the last week, it feels like summer (actually, you never know, it might be our summer! )

In my post Spring cleaningย a month ago, I cleaned up the wall around my raised flowerbeds. After this, my patio looked a little forlorn ๐Ÿ˜ฆ probably wondering if I had forgotten all about it.

Well I’m happy to say that with this great – and I mean GREAT weather – the perfect opportunity presented itself for a little patio TLC.

He never knew what hit him, before he had time to take a breath, he was stripped bare of furniture, plants and stuff.

One proper clean-up with cleaner and a pressure washer, and my patios hair was standing up in pure shock.

Well we couldn’t have any of that, could we! So next day when everything was dried, out came the sanding paper and my Black and Decker sanding mouse. Throw in a few hours of “elbow crease” and my patio was smooth as a baby’s bottom ๐Ÿ˜‰

Fast forward a couple of days, and about 40 minutes ago I finished putting on the last lick of oil!

The patio is positively radiant! Happy as a clam, in mud at high tide ๐Ÿ˜‰

And here it is! Before and after – and a couple of more, for good measures ๐Ÿ˜‰

A screw loose?

My gosh! I have so many tools, way to many tools. I swear I could probably keep the whole neighbourhood with tools ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yepp, I’m not your typical girl when it comes to tools. I love walking around in hardware stores. and I’ve been known to have people come rushing over to me, when I walk in. Just because they think it’s so much fun talking to a girl who has some new project up her sleeve, and actually know what she wants and need ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s hard for me to part with tools, but I came across this screwdriver set today, that I believe I have used only once or twice. I have another one I much prefer, and that set I even have two off ๐Ÿ˜‰

Today this unloved screwdriver set was given to a friend of mine, who surely can get more use of it than me.

A vase or two.. or ten?

I did mention, that I really like flowers and plants, right?

I love surrounding myself with flowers, both indoor and outdoor. So what does this have to do with today’s post? Well, one of the curses with being a little “obsessed” with plants is that, before you know it, you have filled up the house with vases and flowerpots.

So I decided it was time to weed down the amount of vases… How many do I have?

Well, after getting rid of the bunch you see in the picture below, I still… have another bunch, left… ๐Ÿ™‚

And yes, as you can see from the keep pile, it’s still waaaay to many ๐Ÿ˜‰ But about 6 of them are on “probation”, and if they are not used sometime this year, they will be going! So, hopefully next year I’ll be down a few more ๐Ÿ˜‰

But at least for now, 15 pieces of flower related things, are going out-the-door.

Cooked to perfection!

I don’t know what happened to my old trusty thermometer!

All I know, is that it’s showing the wrong temperatures, and it’s made for some interesting cooking lately ๐Ÿ˜‰

So I had to get a new one, and having the choice, I chose to go digital.

I have to admit. It makes for a much easier read of the temperature, no longer having to stick my head into the oven for the readout!

And much safer to ๐Ÿ˜‰

There is Spring in my step!

We are having some really pretty days here this Easter, the sun is out, and I can’t help but hang out in my yard ๐Ÿ™‚

Walking around this morning I suddenly glimpsed a tiny, tiny bit of red out of the corner of my eye, and it stopped me cold.

Could it be? No really.. could it be my first Ladybug of the year?

I stopped and took a closer look, and there – hidden in the middle of some dead leaves still hanging on my “blood birch” – was the first Ladybug I had seen this year. ย I don’t know what it is, but for some reason that first Ladybug in my yard each year, put’s a smile in my heart. It’s almost like that – for that tiny moment – all is well in the world.

Maybe it’s because seeing a Ladybug, brings back a moment in my life, a good memory from when I was about 6 years old. When my best friend at the time and me, ran around in the neighbourhood (in the middle of urban city), picked summer flowers (that we would “sell” to strangers walking by) and “hunted” for ladybugs to count their spots, and see which one of us would find the most “spotted” one ๐Ÿ™‚

This years Ladybug inspired me to take some pictures of my tiny garden (with my phone) – and I just thought I wanted to share my joy of Spring ๐Ÿ™‚

Bunch of boxes

Can you guess what these are?

I won’t keep you in suspense, these are the boxes an Mac Apple mouse comes packed in. What! did I buy that many Apple mouses? No, not at all ๐Ÿ™‚

I came over these in a toss pile at the office a while back, and thought it a great idea to bring them home, so that I could use them for all those little nicknack’s you’ll find in a tool shed. You know nails, screws, nuts and bolts and so on.

So, why are they still laying around all empty?

Well, that is a very good question ๐Ÿ˜‰

It looks like my little plan of sorting screws and nails and stuff, isn’t happening any time soon.

And what am I doing with the boxes?

I believe if I ever get around to the shed sorting, I’ll probably end up using more sensible boxes (turns out they arent all that good anyhow) – so today – they’re going into the plastic recycle bin!

Bye, bye guys.

A purse’s life

I’m not much of a purse/handbag person. I’m more of a backpack, bag, computer-bag kinda person ๐Ÿ˜‰

Even so, I do actually have a handbag or two. ย Over Christmas I found this cute little handbag at the airport in London, and that’s the one I use these days.

In the name of decluttering and minimizing my stuff, I think I’m going to follow the rule of “one in – one out” in this instance.

Therefore I will say goodbye to a handbag that have served me well for a few years, but who have sadly been tucked in a drawer for the last couple years.

I obviously wont’ be using this one ever again… so out-the-door it goes ๐Ÿ™‚

Bye, bye..

A second chance

I love taking photographs, and over the years I have taken thousands and thousands of pictures.

I have a Canon 50D, a proper DSLR, but even so, it’s nice to have a small camera that can easily go into your bag.

Up until last year, I used a small Canon Ixus camera. It has gone with me everywhere, since 2002. ย But last year I swapped it out, for a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ30, that gives me a bigger zoom range, than my old Ixus ever did.

I decided to get this, even as much as I loved my Ixus, so that I could have a decent zoom range without having to always drag my heavy DSLR with me.

As a backup, my faithful Ixus was put away in a drawer.

Yesterday though, my Ixus’s life changed slightly, when a friend from US, decided to take it with him, to the other side of the ocean, to keep as his second camera ๐Ÿ˜‰

Farewell old friend – I wish you happiness, and I hope the two of you, share as many pleasurable moments as you and I did.

The aftermath

I have a friend visiting from US, and yesterday while watching the latest Star Trek movie on blue-ray, we killed off a bottle of our favourite port (Warren’s Optima 10 year).

I’m not sure it this count as one thing out-the-door, but the reality is that my liquor cabinet now holds one less bottle, and take up a little less space. So in my book, it kinda counts ๐Ÿ˜‰

Now if I could just shake this tiny hangover, that would be two things “out-the-door”!

Remind me, not to do any more decluttering of the bar, any time soon, even though it was a fun night ๐Ÿ˜‰
