Oh no…

I’m standing here frozen, my grey Tupperware bowl is on it’s way to the floor….

Two seconds ago I opened my fridge to get some milk, and I accidentally bumped into a Tupperware bowl. And now I’m helplessly watching it falling towards the floor. I tried to grab it, but nope, and there is nothing I can do, other than watch it fall in “slow motion”. I know exactly what’s in it…and I’m crossing my fingers, hoping, the lid will hold.

The bowl, actually it’s quite elegant in its movements, hits the floor, bounce back into the air, and in even slower motions, the lid pops off, and red home-made raspberry sauce splashes out. Oh no…

There is sauce on the wall, floor and fridge. And it’s not a small area either, I told you the darn thing bounced right?

I’m removing as much as possible, as quick as possible, hoping it won’t stain the walls. And realize I have to move the whole fridge, since I see tell tails of red sauce along the side, and all the way to the back end of the fridge area.

So out comes the fridge with a bunch of dust-bunnies tagging along (obviously been a while).

I’m frantically wiping the walls hoping against all odds, that the sauce will come off, my matt painted, white walls. Well, I can tell you.. the matt paint, sucked the sauce right into it, and the result is, very light “pink” markings on the wall 😦 And there is no way I’m going to get away with this being an “artistic” thing….

Well, I did get to “declutter” some dust-bunnies!

But now I have to paint a wall!

Any volunteers out there?

Taking the plunge

The day started nicely enough this morning, and there was no indication of what a messy day this would turn into.

I left work a little early, and when I got home I decided to open all the blinds to let the sun in. Big mistake, big, big mistake… The sun streamed in through the windows and displayed this thin layer of dust all over (you know how it is, when the sun hits everything just right..! )

Bummer! Then I think, well, why don’t I just give this place a quick once-over and then I can relax all weekend in the glory of a clean house πŸ™‚

So I started in the kitchen. Clearing some stuff and throwing it in the trash… wait a minute, hmm my trash cabinet seems to need a little clean out as well, so I empty out everything. Among the things I take out to “dust”, I find a good old plunger.

Can you even remember last time you used one of those? Well, mine is old. And while I dusted it, I noticed it looked a little “stiff” in the rubber, so I put it to the floor to give it a trial plunge. And nothing, nothing at all, other that a small crunchy noise. Better take a look…yep.. it’s dead. Poor thing haven’t been used for so long it petrified πŸ˜‰

Hmmm – an item to toss, cool πŸ™‚ great, I can make a quick little post about it…

Well, not quite, turns out the story didn’t stop there.

Having my nose deep into the cabinet under the sink, it made sense to move my eyes over to the dishwasher right next to it…

Didn’t I read the other day that you should, on a regular basis, clean out the filters and stuff. Great, I think I have one of those dishwasher machine cleaner thingy too. But first the filters.

All cleaned out I put the dishwasher on with that special dishwasher machine cleaner, and smile, all happy with myself.

And then I suddenly remember, don’t I have one of those for the washing machine as well? You can see where this is heading, right? So I walk upstairs., and yep, I’ve got one of those…

Reading the instructions it says to wash the washing powder tray. Right, done. Then to wash the rubber ring in the door.. ok, check.. And then it dawns on me, shouldn’t I have a look at the filter. Out the instruction book comes, get a bucked, empty leftover water, pull the filter. Hmmm, this is starting to look like yucky work to me.. But I go ahead, I know this is good for the machine.

Pulling the instruction book for the washing machine I accidentally opened the dryer instructions first.. Oh “crap” this has a filter as well…. Well, ok then, I finish the washing machine, turn on the washing machine with that special cleaner stuff in, and I turn my attention to the dryer.

Oh, my gosh that filter is disgustingly wet, soggy and yucky. The only fun thing is, that it’s easy to clean. Put it in the shower and pour loads of water through it.. and all the messy stuff just rolls of, and down the drain…

Oh no, the drain

20140124-160940.jpg
Did I ever get to the once-over?

Nope! After the first drain, I decided to tackle the second one, unfortunately that meant moving the washer and dryer to get to it, yikes.. and that job turned into a real workout. Guess I’ll try again tomorrow.

At least all my machines and drains are decluttered though… Oh yes..and the old plunger πŸ˜‰

A change of course…

I’ve come to realise, that, this… “one thing a day” might not work for me.

“Aha.. giving up already? Isn’t this a little early to throw in the towel?” Β Yepp. I can hear you already!

But, you could be wrong πŸ˜‰

I didn’t say I would stopΒ my decluttering. What I’m saying is that there is this odd chance that I might not have the patience for getting rid of only one item a day. I kind of forgot for a minute, that I’m not really the most patience type πŸ˜‰ I sort off want to get rid of stuff now, I mean right now… I don’t really want to wait around.

At the same time, I also know that to declutter some stuff, I need to do other stuff first,Β something which will take time.

To give you one example. One of the declutter tasks I’m planning, is to get rid of most of my papers files. But first I have to scan important papers, to digital form. And that not a job done in a few minutes. And this is not my only digitizing project (I’ll tell you all about them as I move along).Β Β So you see, some declutter items are bigger “projects” on their own.

So what am I saying? Β

I’m letting you know I will get rid of at least 365 items as promised, but I might get rid of them in bulks πŸ˜‰

The key thing is: I will be working on the clutter in my life, through the year. And I will be telling you all about it as I go along.

When I started this, I didn’t have a clear picture about where I wanted to go with this blog, other than posting my daily declutter item.

Now that I’m getting a little into this, I’m coming up with more and more ideas about what I’d like to write about. So stay with me, we are going to have fun with this… πŸ™‚

No need for protection!

I love champagne πŸ™‚ No, seriously, I love champagne, especially pink Champagne (oh yes, and frozen margaritas.. but we can talk about that some other time).

Last year, my brother, his wife and I killed off a couple of Champagne bottles one night, and one of them had this nice little fancy sleeve on it.

So what do I do? I decide to keep this sleeve, thinking it might be useful for another Champagne bottle… You know, to keep it chilled or protected or something.. I don’t know….

It was obviously some misguided idea I had, that I would tuck some Champagne bottle nicely into this little sleeve, for some reason.

Seriously?

It’s not like it’s going to last long enough after it’s opened, to be needing a sleeve to keep it chilled πŸ˜‰ and should I need something, there is such a thing as a bucket and ice.

And it definitely don’t need it for protection. Have you seen how many times they try to break a champagne bottle against a ship sometimes, when they are Christening it?

So what was I thinking?

Obviously I wasn’t 😦 and today I’m taking the consequences of this. The sleeve, however how fancy and cute, has got to go. I think my future champagne bottles will survive, in all their “nude” glory πŸ˜‰

Living a lighter life – a wallet’s short story

I feel lighter now πŸ™‚

My owner is doing a decent job most of the time, only carrying around the most important credit cards, membership card, receipts and things. But I can’t help feeling stuffed some of the time.

I have not been alone. I have a couple of family members still hanging around in this house. They are no longer in daily use and feel somewhat lonely, stuffed away in a dark drawer. Their only job these days have been holding on to a lot of cards that are rarely used, or not used at all. And I know for a fact that my oldest family member is ready to move on to the next realm, he’s done his work and is tired.

Today is a great day πŸ™‚ Our owner decided to bring us all out on the table. She emptied us all out, and while she sorted out all the stuff we were holding, we got to hang out with each other and catch up for a while πŸ™‚

She did really good at getting rid of the unused credit cards, no longer valid membership cards, business cards and so on.

As she was done, she slowly started to put the leftover cards back into our protective fold. This time around though, she left plenty of space for us to breath πŸ˜‰

And guess what, she let my oldest family member retire.Β He is now going into the recycle pile so he can move on…

and he’s bringing a bunch of cards with him πŸ™‚

My Allowance Box

During de-cluttering, one often comes across a few items it’s difficulty to know what to do with. You are not quite sure if you really need it,Β but you are not quite ready to let it go.

Over the years I have found that using anΒ allowance boxΒ can be useful for these items.

What is an allowance box you might ask? It’s where I’ll put items that I need a little more grace period on, to see if I really needed them.Β You know the saying, out of sight, out of mind? Well….

An allowance boxΒ is a box for keeping the things that you are not a 100% sure if you need or not, but you cant bear to part with right now. It’s a box with a deadline on it. A deadline like; next season, 3, 6 or even 12 month into the future, but never more than 12 months.

The key thing is: If you haven’t used the item for the season it is meant for, or within the given deadline you gave yourself. Well, then most likely you will never use it, and it should go out the door.

What do I mean by the season the item is meant for?Β I mean first coming winter for winter; clothes/equipment/sports gear… Or first coming summer for summer; clothes/sport gear/garden stuff… Β Or first coming Christmas for Christmas decoration. You get my drift πŸ˜‰ Β And with first coming winter, I don’t meanΒ nextΒ winter if your in the middle of winter when you do the clean up, I mean this winter πŸ˜‰ (or summer/Christmas/spring).

For example, I’ve been wanting to throw a garden party for a while, but it seems like my summers are mostly filled with garden projects instead, which leaves no time for parties. Now that I’m almost done with creating my garden, there might actually be hope of throwing that party (yeah right, like that is really going to happen since I always find some project to do in the garden) πŸ˜‰

So what’s that gotta do with an allowance box you might as. Well there are some stuff I have, that I think I’ll need for that party. Items that I otherwise won’t need to keep. So what will I do? I’ll be putting the garden party stuff into my allowance box, and if I don’t throw that party this year (yes 2014), well, then, guess what, come fall.. out the door it goes.

Here is another example, clothes: If it’s something that don’t fit you and you are having a hard time parting with it because you believe you will “grow” into it within the next xx months, be honest with yourself, do you really believe that it’s going to happen? If that is a yes, or you are already in the process of making it happen. Consider keeping only items that looks great on you, and that you love πŸ™‚ Put the item in your allowance box. And set a date, to when they should fit or go out the door.

What items can this work for?
An allowance box can be great for a lot of things, for clothes, tools, kitchen stuff, books, office stuff, sports items, cables, computer stuff, you name it…

The important thing to remember is. That you never keep the stuff longer than the allotted time you have given yourself, on the allowance box.

You didn’t use those summer outfits this summer? It’s time to let them go. You didn’t use that Christmas decoration by Christmas, well it’s time to let it go, and so on.

How big is this box?
Well that depends a little on what it is your keeping, if your keeping a set of golf clubs they don’t really fit in a small box do they? If we are talking about clothes, then the box shouldn’t be all that big.

How many allowance boxes do I get?
You might find that you end up with two or three allowance boxes (I know I’ll probably have one for clothes and one for miscellaneous).

If you believe you will need more than a couple of small boxes, you should dedicate a limited space for them, so that you don’t save more than what fits in that space (and no I don’t mean the whole garage is your allotted space πŸ˜‰ ). I’ve dedicated a shelve in one of my closets to keep my allowance boxes.

Where do I store them?
You should store the allowance box somewhere it’s a little bit difficult to get to it, but not so difficult you have to tear down the house to get to it.

What do I mean by a little bit difficult? Well, for example, I keep my kitchen tool allowance box in my guest room upstairs, hidden at the bottom of a cabinet, behind some stuff.Β JuuuustΒ hidden enough that it’s a little bit of a hassle to get to it.Β But not so difficult it’s going to take a couple of days to get to that item I suddenly needed, in the middle of making a dish that demanded that specific item I had “de-cluttered”.

Out of sight, out of mindΒ box:
Now, there is a different way of doing this if you want to.

Rather than have a allowance box which is readily available. you could make aΒ out of sight, out of mindΒ box, which is not so readily available.

For the items you are struggling with. Put them in a box, tape it shut, write a date, say… 6 months into the future. Put the box away (loft, garage, basement). When the day comes around, take the box and get rid of it. Do not open it first, most likely you won’t even remember what’s in it ? (another reason not to open it).

If you have already had to dig into the box for some reason, during the waiting period, whenever the date comes around, take what is left in the box and dispose of it. Just like if you had never opened the box at all. You have obviously already picked out the stuff that you absolutely needed, and whatever is left is, out the door items.

So which system do I use?
“Allowance box” or “Out of sight, out of mind box”?

They are in essence the same, the only difference might be the retrieval process πŸ˜‰ Β So it depends a little on you, and how you want it. I have been known to use both πŸ™‚ You gotta go with whatever feels right for you.

My declutter system

Today I wrote a post about my declutter system. And thinking I’ll be really smart, I wanted this post to show on my menu bar, to make it easy to find later (just have a look, it worked). So I created a separateΒ page on my blog (my understanding is that that was the only way to have it show in menu bar), if anyone else knows a different way.. please let me know.

And guess what… did the “darn” thing show up in WordPress reader or on my Facebook page? NOPE…

So what is a poor girl to do? Well this is my solution. I’m making a post, about my post πŸ˜‰ How do you like them apples?

Christmas is truly over!

Today the last of the amaryllis died.

You’re thinking, why is this a big deal?

Well a couple of years ago, I came across these beautiful white double flowered amaryllis plants. Since they were rare (I’ve never seen them again) I decided to save the bulbs to regrow them.

Last year only some came out with flower. This year on the other hand, none of them made it 😦 just green leaves, that’s it.

So I have decided to officially throw in the towel on my amaryllis growing abilities (which I obviously don’t have) and I won’t be saving them for next year. I’ll just have to hope they come back on the marked sometime…

Last year. Isn’t it pretty?

Now on the other hand, 5 old bulbs + this years amaryllis is going..

Such a doormat…

I’ve got this post I’m planning, and I’m hoping to get to work on it some this weekend (I just need to get my ducks in a row). But in the spirit of de-cluttering I figured it was time to post another item out the door πŸ™‚

IKEA have this wonderful policy (at least here in Norway.. I noticed the Ikea policy wasn’t quite as “easy breezy” when I lived in Houston). In Norway they will let you return items as long as you have the original receipt and give you the money back. If you don’t have the receipt they will give you a gift certificate for the amount, and there are no limits on how many times you can return without a receipte.

What on earth does this have to do with my out the door item? Well about three months ago I bought a couple of doormats and I’ve been driving around with the one I decided not to use in my car, forever.. but it was time.

Doormat to Ikea, money back to me πŸ™‚

Loosing a loved one…

Today I got some sad news from a friend of mine. His mum had passed away quite suddenly. Losing a loved one is hard and my heart goes out to him.

It brought back memories from times I’ve spent together with both him and his mum, and I just want to give him the biggest hug.

Writing this makes me think of all the people that have been part of my life. They have been in my life for a lifetime or a moment (and everything in between). And one way or another they have all been important.

Some have come quickly and left just as quickly, but even so, they’ve made an impression. Some have stayed awhile and left footprints all over my heart, and some have changed my life forever.

Some I’ve tolerated and some I have liked. Some I have loved lightly and some I have loved deeply. And in the midst of all this we have all been in each other life’s for a reason. To teach, challenge or love each other.

What happened today, reminds me that life is short. And we should all embrace the people that comes into our life. If they are here for a reason, a season or a lifetime!

RIP.
